In June, Sunlabob's Chief Operating Officer Simon Henschel was invited to assist in a business competition organised by Student In Free Enterprise (SIFE) Thailand and conduct audits on socially responsible business projects.
SIFE, headquartered in the United States of America, is an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible individuals.
Students form teams on their university campuses and apply sustainable operations concepts to develop outreach projects.
An annual series of competitions provides a forum for these teams to present their projects and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. Teams compete first at the regional and national levels, then at the international level where the national champion teams from each country meet at the SIFE World Cup.
Joining Simon in the team of auditors were Mae Fah Luang Foundation's Chief Development Officer M. L. Dispanadda Diskul and SIFE Thailand staff.
The team visited 5 universities in Northern Thailand to meet with student groups who were preparing to take part in the 2012 SIFE Thailand National Competition. Conducting audits on the projects to monitor the economic, social and environmental factors that contribute to community development, the auditing team put special emphasis on the participating groups' abilities to set up sustainable community relationship and governance.
One of the objectives of the SIFE project is to bring people together, therefore students are encouraged to interact with the community and vice versa.
As part of the visit, the auditing team also shared insights on different models and knowledge of local community member and leaders.
The 2012 Thailand National Competition is open to the public and will be held at Srinakarinwirot University at Asoke in Bangkok on July 28-30. The winner will then represent Thailand at the SIFE World Cup in Washington, D.C. on October 30 - September 2.
