This week, a Sunlabob community engagement expert provided consultation during a field visit to Ban Lad Khammune, a village of 241 people in rural Laos.
The governmental organization Youth Corps Singapore, which matches youth volunteers with critical community needs, is leading a project to provide long-term renewable energy-based electrification in the village, which is only accessible via a four hour boat ride along the Mekong River from Luang Prabang town.
Sunlabob’s expert, Daophet Vongsakhamphoui, undertook an environmental assessment as well as a social survey of the community to evaluate which solar solutions would be necessary to achieve the needs of the village.
The first step is to provide solar power for the community’s health clinic which serves seven villages and total of 2,500 people.
Through the support of YMCA of Singapore and other donors, the initiative seeks to ultimately implement a village-wide solar power plan to provide household lighting for the 67 families of Ban Lad Khammune.
